Breast cancer is the commonest cancer the world over among women, with Pakistan being one of the most effected country.
An estimated 40,000 to 60,000 women die of it in Pakistan every year. As compared to the western world, women effected are a decade younger, which makes the picture more worrisome. If detected in early stages and if properly managed, approximately three out of four women survive and stay in remission. Unfortunately, most women present late due to a multitude of socioeconomic reasons and that reduces their chances of survival.
Humqadam is a non-profit organization established in Lahore in 2017 with the aim of providing education, support and treatment for patients with breast diseases in general and breast cancer in particular. It also aims to provide a service to diagnose breast cancer and other breast diseases, formulate a protocol-based treatment plan for individual patients, insuring that the patients are getting appropriate treatment by regular follow up and advice, and to provide psychological support to the breast cancer patients and their loved ones.
There are only few dedicated centers to provide treatment under one roof and most patients are treated in different hospitals and different departments without any coordination and liaison. As a result, patients get suboptimal treatment with relatively poor outcome, even when they seek treatment.
